Can someone live comfortably off of a personal trainer salary?

I'm interested in becoming a personal trainer %26 I'm wondering if I can be financially secure with this career? What if I end up only working in a gym atmosphere? Also, I'm only around 5'1' do you think my height will affect my chances of getting a job? Thanks for any info.

If you got the knowledge it takes to be a personal trainer, then you're height shouldn't make a difference. My daughter has a personal trainer who is shorter than she is, and there's never a problem. Financially secure...that all depends on what your definition is...a person working at McDonalds making $8 an hour can be financially secure if they live within their means. At the same time, a person making $100k annually can end up financially insecure if they live outside of their means. I think a better way to view this is whether or not you can live the way you want to live on a salary that a personal trainer would make. Some people are perfectly happy owning a trailer on an acre of land, out in the middle of nowhere, driving an old beat up pick up truck, eating generic green beans rather than Green Giant, etc...and coming home to a happy family every evening. But then there are those who require a top of the line car, 3 bedroom house in the suburbs, credit cards galore, and exotic family vacations annually, etc. to be happy...all depends on who you are and what you consider comfortable. Either life is one to be proud of.
As others have pointed out, it depends on your definition of comfortably. Salary range for personal trainers varies dramatically based upon region, experience, and if you run your own business. To make real money and have control of your life, you are going to want to leave the gym and start your own business when the time is right. There is a good guide and salary discussion at the page below.
